Edgar Allan Poe is a very famous and well known author, who was part of the American Romantic Movement. He published many stories and poems that greatly expressed his own thoughts and emotions as well as what was occurring around him. He was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. At a young age, his mother died after his father left the family. Poe was an orphan. John and Frances Allan took him into their care, while never officially adopting him. At 17 years old, Poe was accepted into University of Virginia. He, however, gambled away all of his scholarship money in the first semester, and therefore left. Because of this, using a pseudonym, Poe enlisted into the army claiming he was 22 years of age.
Beginning his writing as an anonymous author publishing poems in a book titled 'Tamerlane and Other Poems' in 1827. Most of the poems written in this book are when he was 14. A few years later, in 1835, Poe married his 13-year old cousin at the age of 27, which was considered normal at the time whilst is now considered very frowned upon. Poe wrote many stories and poems that reflected his sorrowful life posing his wife's death of tuberculosis, his mother's death, and his father's abandonment. Poe's most famous writing is 'The Raven' which was published in 1845 and is very popular today.Edgar Allan Poe was suspected of being an alcoholic, considering him joining Alcoholics Anonymous and attempting to overdose on Laudanum, which is an alcoholic herb preparation. Although his death is not specifically known, it is suspected that he died of rabies, diabetes, epilepsy, carbon monoxide poisoning, alcohol dehydrogenase,
and cooping. There are over 26 theories revolving his death, and they have sparked lots of controversy about the truth.
Poe was a very influential and intelligent person. He had a few issues in his life, as would anyone, including his attempted suicide, but thrived through it publishing his best works of art; literary writings. Poe was valued by many people, even being part of a small model for Sherlock Holmes. Poe's writings were so popular and well written, that they are still read today as well as used to teach high-schoolers about literacy.
I like your biography on Poe, hitting up on all of those important events in Poe's life and I also like how you included that Poe took part in being a small model for Sherlock Holmes and how even though he suffered a lot, he was just going through life like everyone was. But I would like to differ on what you said that Poe's literary writings were valued by many people that they are still read today. It is true that his writings are read to today, but during the time of his life, his writing had no fame nor was it getting really any attention.
ReplyDeleteMost of the information yo wrote was what I found too, however I didn't know rabies was a possible cause of death! or epilepsy and carbon monoxide and diabetes for that matter! Also-what is cooping?? It's cool, all of his mysterious death rumors. I also had no idea Holmes was partially modeled after him.
